Album Review: 'Coward' by Nels Cline

Nels Cline, the guitarist from Wilco, has released a new solo album filled with delicate and powerful textures and melodies all sown from the fabric of his guitar and other instruments. The soothing melodies of Pat Metheny, off-beat styles of Jim O'Rourke and John Zorn, and even Neil Young's music are all evoked in this album by a recently named "Guitar God" in Rolling Stone. This record defies genre. Ambient, Avant Garde, Post Rock, and Experimental Rock are all included in Nel's hodgepodge record. The first track, "Epiphyllum" is more akin to the works of Tim Hecker and Stars of the Lid and the fourth track, "The Adrogyne", sounds almost improvised, switching between melody and dissonace. Tracks 9-15 continue along this avant-garde track, resulting in some very off-beat electronica. Look forward to hearing some tracks Nels Cline's new album on next week's Hotel Parallel.
